How to become a blockchain developer

To become a blockchain developer, first become a solid software engineer in one mainstream language, then learn one chain well, then prove it with public code. That order matches what employers post: on Jobs Web3, 97 open blockchain developer roles at 48 companies (October 2026) ask for smart contract experience, but also for Python, Go and TypeScript, and almost none are open to beginners.

What does a blockchain developer do?

Three kinds of work hide behind the title:

  • On-chain: writing and testing smart contracts or programs that hold and move funds.
  • Protocol: building the clients, consensus and networking that run a chain.
  • Off-chain: the services around a chain, such as indexers, APIs, wallets and bridges.

Most open roles mix on-chain and off-chain work. Among the 97, the most frequent tags are smart contracts (61), Solana (39), Python (35), Go (32), Rust (28), EVM (28), TypeScript (22), Solidity (18) and Java (18).

Blockchain developer roadmap

1. Learn a mainstream language to a professional level. Python, Go or TypeScript, depending on the team you want to join. Each appears in 23% to 36% of the blockchain roles, and they are what the off-chain half of the work is written in.

2. Pick one ecosystem. EVM chains (Ethereum and its layer 2s) use Solidity; Solana uses Rust. Solana appears on 39 of the 97 roles and EVM on 28, so both are viable. Move-based chains such as Aptos and Sui are a niche, with 2 roles.

3. Learn how contracts fail. A bug can lose real money, so employers ask about testing more than about syntax. The classics are reentrancy (a contract is called back before it updates its balance), badly protected admin keys, unsafe upgrades and manipulated oracle prices.

4. Build in public. A small app that connects to a wallet, a contract deployed on a test network, or a fix merged into an open-source project.

5. Get your first role from the side. A backend role at a crypto company, a security or QA role, or an internship. There is one blockchain developer internship on the board today, against 96 roles at mid-level or above.

Is learning blockchain development hard?

The concepts are learnable; the bar for a first job is high. Of the 97 roles, 41 are mid-level, 26 senior and 22 lead. In the descriptions read in October 2026, 44 of 96 stated a minimum experience, with a median of 5 years.

What makes it hard is the cost of mistakes, not the languages. Testing came up in 42% of those descriptions, audits in 21%, and open source or GitHub in 23%.

Is C++ used in blockchain?

In some protocol work, yes, but it is not the main language: 8 of the 97 roles carry a C++ tag, against 35 for Python and 32 for Go.

Where do blockchain developers work?

At exchanges, wallets and protocol teams. The companies with the most open blockchain developer roles are Coinbase (8), OKX (7), Bybit (5), Phantom (4), Robinhood (4), Matter Labs (3), Ondo Finance (3) and Mysten Labs (3).

74 of the 97 roles are remote (76%), more than twice the share across the whole board. Browse them on smart contract jobs, Solidity developer jobs and Rust blockchain jobs.

What developers on r/ethdev advise. In the thread "Is Web3 Development really worth it for a fresher in 2026?", one developer suggests focusing on mainstream backend or full-stack skills first and treating web3 as a specialization later, "because junior hiring in crypto is still much smaller and more cyclical than regular software hiring". Another, who had been applying for web3 jobs every day for three months, suggests starting with a "normal" tech job and moving to web3 later. The roles on our board point the same way: among the 97 blockchain developer roles there is one internship and no junior role.

How long does it take to become a blockchain developer?

The board cannot say. It shows the target: where a minimum is stated, employers ask for a median of 5 years of experience, and 96 of the 97 roles are mid-level or above. For someone who already works as a software engineer, steps 2 to 4 are a smaller step than starting from zero.

How much do blockchain developers earn?

About a third of these roles publish pay: in October 2026, 38 of the 103 blockchain developer roles counted as in how to hire a blockchain developer showed a range, 32 of them annual ranges in US dollars with a median midpoint of $197,500. The blockchain developer salary page shows ranges across web3 developer roles with their sample sizes.

Can I become a blockchain developer without a degree?

Often, yes: only 19 of the 97 role descriptions mention a degree, and some of those accept equivalent experience.
